We are international fine art consultants confidentially serving and advising private and corporate clients around the world for nearly 45 years.

Our workload involves conducting investigations into the authenticity of art from all categories and genres and from all artists and eras.

We scrutinise and qualify the provenance of works of art and inspect and review single items and complete collections with a view to identifying any legitimacy issues and investigating forgeries and fraud internationally.

Though the demands of an investigation into any work of art may vary from artist to artist, these activities fall into well defined responsibilities, services and formalities that we can help you with.

Authentication:  Investigation and in-depth research, undertaken to establish a formally recognised, correctly underpinned certification of a work of art that is upheld and certified by the appropriate, legally acknowledged authority on that artist.

This would include works of art that have a specific signatorial claim or a former expert qualification of authenticity and those which currently have none.   Usually requiring expert, multilingual, international academic research and a variety of forensic applications.

Attribution:  Identifying and confirming the identity of a previously anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a work of art most likely came. This may possibly be an artist not been previously considered or one that had not been formerly identified.

Revision:  Re-examining and investigating an assigned attribution that may be incorrect, formally challenged, questioned, or is being legally prosecuted.

Confirmation:  Conducting research into the confirmation of the provenance, history, lineage and prior ownership of a work of art.

Scrutiny:  Identifying possible forgeries and determining those works of art which may be studio or later copies, previously misrepresented, or wrongful attributions.

Prosecution:  Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those who may be considering litigation or prosecution.

Attention:  Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care enquiries. Including safe prepurchase or sale related inquiries and studies and advising clients in consolidating secure, well balanced future family distribution of their art assets.

We are here to help you with all fine art authenticity related matters.

"We should all realise that we can only talk about the bad forgeries, the ones that have been detected;

The good ones are still hanging on walls!"

Step one in the Authentication Process

The Pre-Authentication viability study.

When presenting any case for final consideration in order to determine the authenticity of a work of art, this can only be accomplished by approaching those individuals who are legally empowered and fully recognised internationally to do so.

Only they, be they a committee, panel, or an individual expert that is unanimously regarded as the ultimate authority on that artist, is recognised to do so. No other form of approval or certification is accepted internationally as being either absolute or reliable.

Before you do commit to any art authenticity investigation, it is wise to have an independent and impartial preliminary assessment of the viability of the case conducted first. A study made to balance any negative issues that are evident with the positive. If there are too many obstacles or adverse factors to overcome, then to even consider proceeding further would be unsafe

We can undertake that study for you, rationally balancing all the known facts you present to us.

It makes a great deal of sense.

Detailed Services Summary:

A detailed summary of the services offered by the Freemanart Consultancy and its wide variety of art and antiques authentication procedures follows.

Please navigate the buttons on the left of your screen (above) to learn more on each topic.

The clients relying on Freemanart, often specifically require the authentication and appraisal of British,  American, Canadian and European Art and Antiques. This level of workload would normally include the investigation, attribution and authentication of oil paintings, the authentication and attribution of water colours, the authentication of acrylic paintings, pictures and prints. We also concentrate on authenticating many different artist’s graphic works and which  includes; etchings, engravings, lithographs, mono prints, serigraphs, silk screen, wood block and limited edition prints.

Freemanart also employ experts whose area of expertise is in the authentication, valuation and appraisal of ceramics, pottery, figurines and furniture and collectibles.

In relation to three dimensional works and pottery particularly Picasso ceramics, there are a wide variety of authentication issues which currently surround the levels of fake and faux Picasso ceramic works which are available for sale on the market.

At Freemanart, our experts also value and investigate the authenticity of and appraise rare and antique books, bibles and first editions, maps, photographs, authenticate autographs and  drawings in pencil, silver point, pen and ink and charcoal. Coins, medals, stamps, postcards and private collections of all kinds.

Art Fakes and Forgery:

As Art and Antiques appraisers specifically specialising in the field of the authentication of paintings, pictures and antiques, we also aim to identify and investigate both art and document forgery, including fakes and art forgeries of all kinds.

To this end, Freemanart have specialists who specialise in the identification of fake and illegitimate works of art of all kinds and also forged, copied and illegitimate signatures.

Naturally, much of our work load is taken up with the authentication of paintings, but we also authenticate drawings, ceramics, sculpture and limited edition prints too, particularly those attributed to, claiming to be by or after Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

However, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall also account for a large proportion of our authentication schedule and the business of authenticating artwork. Particularly the authentication of artist’s signatures.

Our About Fakes section and archive specifically covers this subject with good examples of fake works by artists such as Picasso  http://wastefulness is also an excellent resource on art fraud, forgery, fakes and illegitimate art for interested parties.
