Paul Cezanne Art Authentication Investigations - Before you begin.

STEP ONE - THE PRELIMINARY ASSESMENT OF VIABILITY STUDY

We recommend that before entering into a full investigation of legitimacy or possible attribution of any work of art believed to be by Paul Cezanne, it is essential to consider its viability.

So we prefer to undertake a preliminary, professional pre-authentication assessment of the work in question for clients first.

An important study and advisory which is based upon the images you supply, the details of the work of arts history and provenance as is known to you and any previous research or analysis that you may have formerly conducted on it, if there is any.

An unbiased study aiming to balance any negative issues against the positive that are immediately recognisable and whatever requirements that may be necessary in its future pursuit.

It's a logical and cost effective professional assessment for which there is a modest set fee.

Then you will be in a far better position to judge if the project is actually worth undertaking or not.

Please see our FAQ's which explains this process in detail.

A word of caution

Be cautious of anyone offering you a certificate of authenticity for any Old or Modern master work of European origin.

They are entitled to give their opinion, that is their right, but ask yourself, is that opinion any guarantee and is it from an internationallyrecognised scholar or authority on that artist ?

*Only those recognised by EU and International law, legally empowered to do so can rule on authenticity.

Are they that person?

The French artist Paul Cézanne certainly did not sign or date all of his paintings during his prolific artistic career, thus making Paul Cezanne art authentication and anyone confirming positive attributions to him, an extremely difficult task indeed.

Based upon expert opinion alone, many paintings believed to be by Paul Cezanne have been summarily dismissed over the years either as fakes or forgeries. Alternatively written off as paintings initiated by a Cezanne follower and an imitator of his style and sometimes previously wrongly judged as legitimate Cezanne works of art.

When you consider this weak methodology, based on opinion alone, it is something of a dangerous position to be in, particularly as we now have the tools available to discover and uphold and prove in these modern times, with forensic expertise and physical cross comparative analysis and investigation available to us.

Investigating the authentication of any work of art, despite those believed to be by Cezanne, is an infinitely time consuming task.

One with hours of painstaking effort researching European archives, or conducting detailed forensic analysis and cross comparative analytical studies. That comes well before the final presentation of any case for attribution or authenticity to the legitimate and expert authority on Cezanne.

Annually at the Consultancy, we see dozens of works of art believed to be by Paul Cezanne, with many with nothing atypical about them at all.

Missing Cezanne's.

La Maison Jas de Bouffan in western Aix-en-Provence was the country house of Paul Cezanne's family and his home for many years. Its environs played an important role in his artistic development with its images captured in many of his lesser known works from that period. In fact, many of these earlier paintings are missing, presumed burned by Cezanne himself after the death of his mother and the unavoidable sale of the property. But were they all destroyed or are there more lost Cezanne's out there yet to be discovered and proven legitimate?

Paul Cezanne paintings it can be said, are easily identifiable by the accents and characteristic style that he developed. But what of the lesser works, the hundreds of oil studies, drawings and sketches which he produced in his lifetime which do not comply with the norm?

A STOLEN CEZANNE

CEZANNE: Garçon dans une veste rouge (Right) is believed to be one of the most valuable paintings in the world.

Unfortunately, 'Boy in a red vest' (Paul Cezanne) was stolen in recent years and its current whereabouts are still unknown. A huge reward is still outstanding and offered for information leading to its return and the prosecution of the art thieves.

The red vest theme was repeated in Cezanne's lifetime with several works created by him in the same vein and plenty of fakes too.

Cezanne Case Study

Two points here worth remembering with art authentication; Missing the patently obvious.... is one

It costs a lot of money to go straight into forensic art analysis and commissioning reports. Particularly when it's obviously a patent waste of time right from the start and totally unnecessary to do so! Frankly unless you have bench mark comparables to work with, forensic analysis tells you little, other than giving you a 'maybe' the materials used were available to the artist? Not that they are exactly one and the same.

Here is a not Cezanne which the client was certain was and subsequently commissioned an expensive forensic report from a European laboratory, which of course they readily undertook !.

The signature below is a fake. An addition to the original work of art, added sometime after the painting was first executed.

The fluorescence of Ultra Violet light which makes the signature stand out against the background, is physical testimony to that. As it the fact that the paint from the fake signature actually soaks into cracks (craquelure) on the original painting, yet these facts were ignored by the client.

Fake Cezanne Signature

However what cannot be ignored is the Stencil stamp on the stretcher on the back reading 289 GZ.

This is a typical identification stamp from the auction house Christies, Manson and Woods from London, who used to follow the practise of stencilling client numbers on the backs of paintings and more importantly keeping records of what they took in for auction, going back a very long way.

This stencil number corresponds exactly with a shipment of 40 paintings which were submitted to Christies in London for auction in July of 1940 by the British Red Cross Society.

All of the works of art were donated by unknown individuals from the UK and elsewhere to the charity, to help raise money for the war effort.

The paintings, including this one was sold on the 25th of October 1940 and none of the landscapes made more than £5 GBP and in 1940 this one had no signature!

At some time after the sale, it magically grew one!

Paul Cezanne died in 1906 a full 34 years before the painting appeared at Christies.

One can easily opinine on whether the painting looked like a typical Cezanne or not, but logic and record are undoubtedly the master here.
