 Before entering into a full investigation of legitimacy of any work of art, it is essential to consider the viability of the project in a balanced and clear way. With that in mind, we prefer to conduct a professional assessment of the merits of the work in question first.

 This is an important primary study made at the start of the authentication process, based upon your images you supply, the details of the work of arts acquisition, its history and provenance as is known to you and any previous research that you may have already conducted.

You will then be in a much better position to decide if the project is worthwhile pursuing further.

This is a logical and cost effective professional assessment for which there is a modest set fee.

 One interesting example of a Thomas Gainsborough fake, is told through an international investigation we conducted into an alleged Thomas Gainsborough oil landscape.

This is one time where the would be faker made some pretty basic errors of judgement.

CASE STUDY:

 Most will know that Thomas Gainsborough was a famous English painter of noble portraits, landscapes and what was called 'fancy' pictures. The painting Blue Boy for instance,  which is known the world over is one of his masterpieces.

Clearly Gainsborough was one of the most individual geniuses in British art history and a founder member of the prestigious Royal Academy, both a successful and a very wealthy man.

 The painting above, is what was truly believed by its owner to be a legitimate and authentic Gainsborough landscape painting. An oil on canvas of figures on a mountain track by a stream. And indeed, why should it not be believed to be original, it had been in the family over a century. It's a typically 'Gainsborough-esque' landscape and one backed up with long term provenance and it is signed after all.

 The so called 'Gainsborough' painting had been cleaned and restored, but the conservator was reticent to clean the signature area, for fear of damaging it. So the discoloured old varnish can still be seen covering it. Obviously it's been there for a very long time.

 Now take a much closer look at the signature (above right) and you will very clearly see pencil lines appearing underneath the painted letters, T - G and the 'a' of the name. And as we said, that varnish has been there a very, very long time.

 But ask yourself, what sort of artist signs a painting first in pencil and then goes over it with paint?

The answer is obvious. Someone who is copying another example of a signature and putting it onto a painting as a new signature. Thus making it now something much more special, much more important and valuable than it started out, simply by adding the name Gainsborough to it. 

And all this happened over a century ago!
