Marine Artist

 The celebrated Victorian maritime artist William Lionel Wyllie is regarded as one of Britain's top marine artists and has been described as "the most distinguished marine artist of his day."

A talented painter in both oils and watercolour, he is also known for his rare atmospheric etchings of the ships and vessels frequenting British waterways, harbours, rivers and ports which command high prices in the art market.

A regular exhibitor at both the Royal Academy and Royal Institute all through his life, his marines and seascapes are eagerly sought after.

 A biography of his life is necessary here and has been fully documented and well covered by other specialised commentators.

 However he is often quite poorly emulated, most likely due to the vastly increasing values of his painting, sadly variations of his works are often faked. Yet there may just be works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced and are yet to be documented. But today, it has to be said, some of the Wyllie works that do appear of the open market are either misattributed to his hand, either mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, with the latter application all too obviously frequent.

 Simply by the inclusion of a copied signature or a monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar type, style, or subject matter to his own marine paintings, or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work, even a student of the arts emulated effort, (where an original signature has been deleted,) it is no wonder that question marks can and do so often arise about the authenticity of some William Lionel Wyllie paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of William Lionel Wyllie .

 Were the name William Lionel Wyllie given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually John Brett, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, William Lionel Wyllie .

William Lionel Wyllie , then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When William Lionel Wyllie ; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of William Lionel Wyllie "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

 When the term “After….” William Lionel Wyllie ; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original..

William Lionel Wyllie ; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

 When the term William Lionel Wyllie is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature William Lionel Wyllie /date/inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
